Barbara Gilby

Barbara Jane Gilby grew up in a musical family (Anne, piano and oboe; Martin, french horn and Janet, viola) and graduated with a masters degree in violin performance from Boston University.
After about 20 years of working as a violinist in ensembles in Iceland, Germany and Tasmania she returned to her home town of Canberra to teach at the ANU.
Not only did she teach the violin, she also tutored ensembles, delivered a course on ensemble leadership and was concertmaster of the Canberra Symphony Orchestra.
In 2012 the university decided that instrumental teaching was too expensive for its business model, and after completing the teaching of current students, Barbara’s thoughts turned to her next station in life. Braidwood it is! Barbara continues to teach the violin privately and to participate in chamber music with  Canberra Strings (Covid allowing) and is excited to enter the world of community radio.
