Station Update
Written by Gordon Waters on April 8, 2026
It’s been a busy start to the year at your local community radio station, 88.9 Braidwood FM. Much of the time, community radio is seen as both a distraction (background music) and an abstraction (ephemeral and ethereal, existing only in ‘radio waves’). It’s therefore important to get our ‘hands dirty’ – and quite literally so in the case of our recent Majors Creek pig races broadcast! This outside broadcast was well received and we thank our supporters at Majors Creek for assisting us. Braidwood FM also conducted another successful broadcast at the 2026 Braidwood Show, with many participants and stakeholders interviewed. It is wonderful to see the true diversity of the Braidwood community on ‘show’ at our annual shindig!
There’s also been plenty going on behind the scenes, as we strive to continue to provide a quality radio service to Braidwood and surrounding districts. To this end, we’ve recently installed two weather cameras to complement our radio service (at the Braidwood FM studio and atop Mount Gillamatong). We will also shortly have two automatic weather stations to complement our webcams; the webcams have been well received by the community. Recently we have undertaken some upgrades to transmission equipment to improve our redundancy and resilience- it’s better to be safe than sorry! Thanks must go to our tireless and peerless Manager, Gordon Waters, for driving these improvements.
We are always on the lookout for Braidwood’s next radio star- if you think you have what it takes, visit our website [braidwoodradio dot com dot au] where you’ll find membership applications and tips on how to get started! Sponsors are also the stars of the show and ensure the station keeps the lights on; a sponsorship application is also just a click away!
Yours in radio,
William Renton (Billy Bob)
President
